SkitzoFreniak dropped his eighth solo album, Journey, in early December ‘25, and this record has got us instantly addicted.
The ominously dark album-opener “Handle With Care” sets a scene comparable to an Eminem hit, , SkitzoFreniak’s flow a haunting dream to dive into as his grimy beat serves the vibes of a horror movie. It’s our first hint that this isn’t your usual rap record – rather, an intimate personal adventure through SkitzoFreniak’s innermost experiences, cast against an engulfing sense of darkness that’s absolutely infectious in its unsettling aura.
Venturing through the fourteen-track record, SkitzoFreniak proves he’s a lyrical beast, seeping concepts, rhyme, and realism like a bleeding wound, from UFO metaphors to heartbroken themes, ever fresh and innately thrilling.
Instrumentally, this isn’t a straightforward rap record, verging on the realm of melodic pop in the most unlikely places. “Unsealed” diverts , SkitzoFreniak’s usual hip-hop soundscape with an interestingly organic intro lit with glimmers of piano and guitar, the track verging on melancholia through its downcast harmony, juxtaposed by its fast-paced trap beat. “Food For Thought” reinforces the atmosphere – a true ballad featuring a melody sung against strings and a reverb-drenched piano progression; heartbreakingly emotional and soul-driven – a total switch up from the tone on which Journey started.
SkitzooFreniak proves he isn’t a one-trick pony like the bulk of rappers out there, daring to explore inner emotions, experiences and themes often overlooked by his genre for the sake of ‘coolness’; instead, painting a portrait of a true musical artist through his know-no-bounds lyrics.
It’s worth noting that SkitzoFreniak features on this album as a lyricist and frontman, but the beats aren’t actually his own. This album is crafted from a selection of free beats and backing tracks sourced from artists across the internet and across the globe; an inadvertently collaborative album which , SkitzoFreniak has released as a non-profit creation. But that doesn’t strip away the artistry from this record at all. SkitzoFreniak’s lyrics are realer than anything, inspired by one of the most organic eras in music history.
Let’s dive into the man behind the music for a moment: Raymond, a Netherlands-born artist now residing in Singapore, has been a self-admitted music-admirer since childhood, first dabbling in pop, electronica and grunge-rock before discovering hip hop as a teen. Raised during the early-mid 90s era of hip hop and rap, Raymond reveals, “I loved how people expressed their inner thoughts and raw emotions on a cool-sounding music piece. It felt like the purest art form to me and it stuck with me.” And Raymond resurrects the old-school hip hop aesthetic perfectly, with Journey sounding like an authentic piece plucked from his decade of choice.
But SkitzoFreniak doesn’t rip off the era, instead lacing his own story into its intricate history. And his album, Journey, comes with a solid concept. In the artist’s own words, “This album is basically a celebration – of coming of age and looking back on my journey, my growth as a person and the struggles I still, or have been, dealing with through the past three years, as my last recordings before this album were three years ago.”
