Based out of Atlanta, Georgia, The Real J Israel is an R&B singer whose soulful voice and powerful songwriting are leading him to garner a serious reputation within the genre. He has released three studio albums to date and has collaborated with none other than Sean Kingston (on the 2022 track, All Tonight). Today we’ll be taking a look at Israel’s track, A Better Me (acoustic), which was featured on his 2022 album, Glass Half Full.
This acoustic version sees Israel take a stripped-back approach to production, employing a folky, finger-picked acoustic guitar part as the song’s only accompaniment. The lyrics are deep and reflective, and show Israel realizing that much of what life throws at you is out of your control and that all that matters is that you stand up and be the best version of yourself that you can… “And I ain’t trying to be better than anyone else / All I ever wanted was to better myself”.
The song really shines in this humble, mellow arrangement. Israel’s voice is warm and intimate and he adds some nice harmonies to bring out the lush melodic hooks. The Real J Israel demonstrates his raw talent in this recording and proves that a good song is one that doesn’t need the full force of modern production to make it shine.
