Looking for a bright new vibe to get excited about? NYC’s The Shrimps have got your back. Brothers Marcus and Simon Benjamin dropped their fourth LP, “Finders Keepers,” in September last year, but we’ve been finding a fresh place for it this summer – its upbeat, iced-tea vibes perfect for blasting on a Monday daybreak to quench the blues, or to line a sunny Saturday afternoon with its sweet and addictive feel-good atmospheres.
Like a late-stage Beatles, The Shrimps experiment with the vibrant quirks and organic oddities of psychedelic pop, merged with the unplaceable but absorbing tones that only stem from the most creative and musically fearless minds. From funk basslines to prog rock organs, folk guitars to glimmers of Caribbean and Latin inspirations, “Finders Keepers” is like a beachcomber’s treasure trove; full of retro and nostalgia-inducing pick-ups, unanticipated sounds like mix-matched shells and bottle tops beaded into an exquisite necklace.
The folksy and acoustic “No Regrets” carries the warmth and bittersweet emotional depths of Bob Dylan hits, voices steeped in a nostalgic ‘70s colour. “Siempre” sings its lyrics in Spanish, while the country-rock style ballad “Delicious Sin” carries the California dusk of a Red Hot Chili Peppers piece. “Uncle Joe” and “Under The Sun” each harbour vocals that wouldn’t sound out of place on an emo/punk record. It’s safe to say, there’s a hit hidden in this record for you, whatever your tastes are. Highly Recommended.
