Utah-born actor and musician Trey Warner has been invested in an artistic career from a young age. His first major musical project, Rated Hero, performed a number of notable shows with industry giants in their prime. Warner decided to leave the band to focus on financial independence, and upon achieving his goal of a debt-free lifestyle by the age of 28, he recommitted to pursuing his dreams of working in films and in music. The result of this effort is his most recent EP, titled Meant For You.
Meant For You is built on a base of driving rhythms and powerful instrumentation. This is a rock record at its core, with definitive influences from perhaps both 80’s pop sounds and alt rock elements (Jimmy Eat World comes to mind).
The title track Meant For You kicks off the EP with bouncy synths, vibrant melodies and spacey vocals, followed by We Found Love, Young Love, an anthemic rock track with soaring vocals and a dramatic build.
Start The Fire features bouncy, slightly retro melodies and keys, a lighter number that adds and subtracts a range of particularly textural synths as the track progresses. Unfortunate Fame puts Warner’s clear pop-punk influence on display, with bright harmonies and a classic “be careful what you wish” for message in the lyrics: “fortune and fame, it’s all you dreamt about, now you’re stuck in a nightmare.”
We get a look at Warner’s more vulnerable side in Tonight and Forever, a gentle, emotional number that features beautifully layered vocal harmonies and a dreamy instrument-scape behind it. Tell Me This Is Love is a great, high-energy love track with a toe-tapping rhythm and a catchy hook that you’ll find in your head long after the record is over. The project closes with Teenage Christmas, a rock holiday track conjuring all sorts of the best feelings December has to offer.
With his strong melody writing, relatable lyrics, and straight ahead rock instrumentation as his foundation, Trey Warner has created an EP that’s easy to sing along to and even easier to enjoy. For fans of alt-pop-punk with just a little bit something more, Meant For You is well worth the listen.
