Vancouver-based artist Zachary Toigo has recently released a single titled Miloš. Toigo writes all of his own music and performs multiple instruments as well, including bass, guitar, and keys. His range of influences is broad and includes artists such as The Beatles, Radiohead, Prince, Pink Floyd, and The Smiths.
The resulting product that is this most recent single puts some of these influences on display alongside Toigo’s own artistic skill. Miloš is an excellently produced indie-pop number with a touch of 80s flair that is sure to appeal to a range of audiences.
The track opens with light percussion and a bouncy rhythm guitar before the synthesizers take over the main melodic direction of the track. The gradual build to the final chorus followed by a lengthy fade-out feels like a very natural arc for this song’s structure, further reinforcing the leisurely feel. But don’t mistake the lackadaisical vibes for the absence of energy altogether, as the song still has a driving beat that keeps things moving along with purpose. Another highlight of the track is the use of selective harmonies. They only happen a few times throughout the track, but they’re a beautiful addition that really highlights the melodic choices on the lines when they do appear.
The main melody and lyrics in this track are fairly simple, but it works well with the overall relaxed vibe. The main hook is an instant earworm: “Maybe if you’d like to stop for a drink for a little while.” The repetitive nature of many of the tracks’ sections has a bit of a hypnotic effect, and it’s very easy to find yourself lost within the song.
Overall, this is a more than enjoyable effort from artist Zachary Toigo. This electro-pop track is full of dreamy, laid-back vibes that feel like a perfect capstone at the end of the summer season. Miloš opens the door to many artistic directions that Toigo could explore, and it has us looking forward to hearing much more from him in the future.
