A sequel to last year’s “You Disarmed Your Robot Army,” and an accounting of one’s transition from faulty flesh to immortal robotics, “Meet the Metal Me” is an eclectic, space-synth-sounding story borrowing musical ideas and ominous plots from classic sci-fi series, The Outer Limits.
Zanilonia, the project heralded by multi-instrumentalist David Zee (with a host of revolving guest artists), returns with another interesting tune steeped in comical (but a little sad) sci-fi. Is the present ready for such a projection of impartial posthumanism? It is, and here’s why:
“Meet the Metal Me” is an electro-pop voyage taken with Moog-ish (or Prophet-ish?) synth arpeggios and fuzzy/glassy synth chords. David Zee’s voice is innocently drama-free – as a robot may calmly recount the benefits of its non-degradable essence. And yes, a robot may find many reasons to despair, but its very existence also begets comedy (per the following excerpt):
“I have been changing
But I am still the same guy
Would you stand by me
If I accidentally broke your sweet, expensive electric food mixer?”
And after a (keytar?) solo at about 1:32, we’re introduced to a spacious bridge with those familiar-sounding synth-chords that colored most 80s sci-fi excursions – this is a brief, heartfelt appeal that cleverly returns to the song’s bouncy, Prophet-ish phrasing.
Building to an ending with one final, ominous (but a little playful?) chord, “Meet the Metal Me” continues its notes in the chiming processors of my gleaming metal brain.
A little silly, a little sad, and wholly enjoyable, Zanilonia’s “Meet the Metal Me” is a slightly farcical excursion into the past’s view of our perhaps preordained future. Recommended.
