Based in Richmond, VA, the classic-rock-based, Americana-tinged Rockford Road is on a mission to bring authenticity back into their chosen genre. We last heard from this group back in 2018 when they released their sophomore studio effort Road to Sabattis, an album we found to be “a refreshing bit of full instrumentation and yesteryear composition in an age of looped, cookie-cutter-measures and cheap hooks.”
Rockford Road has stayed entirely true to their down-to-earth, genuine, retro rock sound on their upcoming album 60 Grit. Ahead of its release, the band is premiering the single Doin’ Nuthin’ on June 10th, 2021, and it’s a well-rounded, easygoing reintroduction to their decidedly throwback sound.
“Get a full tank of gas, turn up the volume to 11 and enjoy the
stories of Rockford Road.”
Rockford Road draws some of their inspiration from the likes of Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, and John Prine, and in Doin’ Nuthin’ those influences are on clear display. Led by bright acoustic guitars and both a powerful and refreshingly natural vocal (you won’t find any autotune here!), this track feels like it was conceived in the ’70s but executed in a modern-day studio. And as an added bonus, the guitar solo after the first chorus is a great reminder of the chops that these guys have, and have the skill to restrain. There are plenty of layers of sound and dynamic instrumentation, but they blend together in that simplistic classic Americana way that makes this track just effortlessly listenable.
Like the noteworthy artists that have inspired them, at the heart of this Rockford Road production is quality songwriting. Doin’ Nuthin’ is chock full of romantic lines and clever lyrics, tied together by a chorus that states the wholesome message at this song’s core loud and clear:
“No Florida Keys or Montana skies
I see the world when I look in your eyes
I don’t need to go far away
I’m on vacation each and every day
And doin’ nothin’s my favorite thing to do…with you”
While they might reject the need for a real vacation in this track, Doin’ Nuthin’ sure does make you want to put a drink in your hand and a lover on your arm. The quality songwriting and warm, honest instrumentation are great reminders of everything we love about Rockford Road. And with a twelve-track album on the way and another single (Irish Grass) premiering today as well, we’re thrilled to be along for the ride on their journey, bringing sincerity, integrity, and God’s honest musicianship back into the original rock music of today.
